Frequently Asked Questions about Laser Therapy

Is it painful?

No - all you can feel is the pressure of the probe.

How long does a session take?

Just laser appointments only take 5-10 minutes, however usually other adjunct therapies are required initially.

What does LLLT actually do when applied?

The damaged cells absorb the light and convert it to energy. That energy aids in tissue repair, reduction of inflammation and blocking pain nerves.

Will I be cured forever?

It depends if your condition or diagnosis is acute and/or chronic.

How many treatments will I require?

It is not usually a one-off treatment.  There are different protocols for different conditions, however everybody is unique and that depends on your condition, diagnosis and response to other modalities.

It does require a time commitment and often 3-6 treatments are required before significant progress is made.

Why have I never heard of it?

It is used extensively in Europe, Russia and the USA, and more recently Australia. I am sure you will hear a lot more about it very soon in NZ. If you have lived overseas you may have been treated with a THOR device which is a very common laser device.

What about people who say it’s not helpful?

The research in this field can often be contradictory. There are many different Laser parameters such as output/power density/dose, and each device works with different parameters so it is very difficult to compare studies. There is lots of positive evidence and the FDA and NICE guidelines which are highly regarded have recommended laser therapies in their protocols.
